The Influence of Righteous Women – President Uchtdorf

August 9, 2010 in LDS Singles Events

The Influence of Righteous Women

By President Dieter F. Uchtdorf Second Counselor in the First Presidency

The scriptures give us names of several women who have blessed individuals and generations with their spiritual gifts. Eve, the mother of all living; Sarah; Rebekah; Rachel; Martha; Elisabeth; and Mary, the mother of our Savior, will always be honored and remembered. The scriptures also mention women whose names are unknown to us but who bless our lives through their examples and teachings, like the woman of Samaria whom Jesus met at the well of Sychar (see John 4), the ideal wife and mother described in Proverbs 31, and the faithful woman who was made whole just by touching the Savior’s clothes (see Mark 5:25–34).

As we look at the history of this earth and at the history of the restored Church of Jesus Christ, it becomes obvious that women hold a special place in our Father’s plan for the eternal happiness and well-being of His children.

I hope that my dear sisters throughout the world—grandmothers, mothers, aunts, and friends—never underestimate the power of their influence for good, especially in the lives of our precious children and youth!

President Heber J. Grant (1856–1945) said, “Without the devotion and absolute testimony of the living God in the hearts of our mothers, this Church would die.”1 And the writer of Proverbs said, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

President Gordon B. Hinckley counseled the women of the Church:

“It is so tremendously important that the women of the Church stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord. …

“We call upon the women of the Church to stand together for righteousness. They must begin in their own homes. They can teach it in their classes. They can voice it in their communities.”2

Orange County (OC/BC) California Single Adult Conference, “Move Forward With Faith!”…July 29-August 1, 2010

July 1, 2010 in LDS Singles Events

Orange County
+ Beach Cities
Single Adult Conference
July 29 – August 1, 2010

Register today for another great Orange County (OC/BC) California Single Adult Conference, “Move Forward With Faith!”…July 29-August 1, 2010.

Unlike other conferences, this year’s conference sponsored by all 16 Orange County California Stakes will focus more on mixing and mingling with all-age 31+ activities and some optional separate activities for each “decade”, 30s Midsingles, 40s, 50s, 60+ too. So there’s a little something for everyone.

Here’s some of the Orange County Conference Line-Up:

*******************************************************
Here are a few FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) being asked about the upcoming OC Conference:
What’s the age range for this conference?

This conference is for singles 31 on up. However there will be some separate activities for each “decade” (30s Midsingles, 40s, 50s, 60+) too. So there’s a little something for everyone.

What’s the age range for each “decade”? If I’m on the cusp between decades, which decade group can I attend?

Here’s the breakdown for each decade:

30s Midsingles (31-early40s)

40s Singles (late30s-50)

50s Singles (late40s-60)

Elite Singles 60+

There’s a little overlap so if you are on the cusp you can attend either decade group.
We ask everyone to respect the age ranges. No worries…there are plenty of other all-age 31+ activities where everyone has the opportunity to meet everyone else.

Isn’t this an “older” conference? Will 30s Midsingles actually be attending? If I’m in my late 20s, can I attend?

Actually, this year with both all-age and specific “decade” group activities, we expect much more singles from each decade attending. So expect at least third to half of the crowd being singles in their 30s and early 40s. While this conference is mainly for singles 31 on up, singles in their late 20s, who want to dip their toes into the Single Adult scene, can attend.

I’m a little leery attending all-age 31+ activities for fear of being hit on by people twice my age. How can I meet people of a similar age at this conference?

We encourage you to attend our Friday night Dinner Kick-off at Doheny State Beach before the Friday night dance. When you arrive at the registration desk, you will be directed to picnic games separated by decades (30s Midsingles, 40s, 50s, 60+) allowing you to meet people of a similar age.

Plus at both dances, there will be speed dating rounds by decades, some workshops by age, and optional restaurant dinner groups for each decade on Saturday as well.

We’re taking out the guesswork, so you don’t have to feel like the odd man out and are able meet people of a similar age at this conference.

I’m older in my 60s or beyond, and typically no one in my age attends these things. Will anyone in my age be attending this year?

Yes, we have optional specific activities just for Elite Singles 60+ including speed dating, a restaurant dinner group, and an excursion to the Five Star Montage Resort in Laguna Beach allowing you an opportunity to meet other singles in their 60s. We anticipate having a good and active crowd of Elite Singles 60+ attending. Of course, at the same time, there are other all-age 31+ activities you can choose to participate as well.

If this year’s schedule is having some “decade” group activities, how will I know which activity is all-age 31+ or for my “decade”?

Unless an activity has a stated age range, all the other activities are all-age 31+.

With all the decade group activities, sounds like I’m being forced into only hanging out with people of my age or older. Can I attend activities for people of all ages?

Aside from the beginning in the few 20-30 minutes at the Friday Dinner where people are separated into playing different picnic games by decades, just as an ice breaker to meet new people, the rest of the conference has an all-age 31+ option.

So during the speed dating rounds (by decades) if you choose, you can just attend the all-age dance, music lounge, game room, etc instead. During a few of the workshops that are age specific, held at the same time, there are other all-age 31+ workshops for you to attend as well.

Saturday afternoon if you are in your 60s you can choose the all-age Beach Party in Huntington Beach or your own Elite Singles 60+ activity to the Montage Resort, or free time on your own. For dinner on Saturday night, you can choose to attend the all-age 31+ Dinner and Entertainment at the Irvine Stake Center or choose to attend your decade restaurant dinner group.

Some singles prefer all-age activities; some singles like attending optional decade activities too. Recently Elder Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve spoke here in SoCal to Midsingles confirming that “the Singles Program is NOT an one-size-fits-all program” and also agrees to a varying approach.

So providing optional decade group activities, this is not about “discrimination” or “prejudice”, but rather trying to provide both approaches (all-age 31+ AND decade group activities) so there’s a little something for everyone and better able to reach out to more singles.

Why do I need to register now instead of just showing up at the door?
We encourage everyone to register sooner than later as some activities have a limited capacity and will sell out before the conference.

Unlike some other conferences, this conference is entirely self-funded, meaning early registration helps pay for the cost of the conference.  If everyone registers late and/or just shows up at the door, it makes planning for a conference much more difficult to coordinate and budget.

So the earlier everyone registers, the better conference experience we can provide.

I’m from out the of area, and want to go, but having a hard time to find affordable hotels or ways to carpool or share rooms. Any suggestions?
First, we encourage everyone to join our Conference Facebook Group at http://bit.ly/occonf where you can coordinate with others in sharing rooms or rides.
Plus, right now we have a conference hotel special at the La Quinta Inn in Costa Mesa www.lq.com located next to the 405 Fwy and located conveniently halfway between Irvine and Huntington Beach has offered a weekend conference discount rate for 50 rooms (2 Double Beds) for only $47.30 per night plus 6% hotel tax. Price includes free shuttle to John Wayne Airport, Bright Side Breakfast, Guest Laundry, Outdoor Pool, and Free Parking.

So do the math…4 people staying in the same room breaks down to around only $15 per person per night!!

This discount is only offered to the first 50 rooms first come, first served, and will expire 21 days before July 30. (So July 9 is the last day to get this discount)
For those wanting something nicer, we are finalizing a conference special at the Costa Mesa Hilton across from South Coast Plaza. Stay tuned for more details…
Hopefully, this answers some of your questions, so register TODAY at http://ocbcconference.weebly.com

See you, your friends, and other singles all here in the OC July 29-Aug 1!
